If you are in Marrakech and you would like to go on a safari in the Sahara desert of Morocco and you only have 3 days, we suggest this small getaway to the Zagora and Erg Chigaga desert. This tour of Zagora includes a dromedary ride, a stay in an authentic Berber tent under the stars, as well as a guided visit to the famous Kasbah Ait Benhaddou.
Day 1 • Marrakech – Kasbah Ait Benhaddou – Zagora – Mhamid
We will depart from the hotel with our 4X4 SUV which we will use to cross the High Atlas mountains through the Tizi N´tichka pass, enjoying amazing views and its unique landscapes. We will stop to visit the Kasbah Ait Benhaddou (a World Heritage Site), one of the most picturesque and unique places to visit in all of Morocco. Then we will continue our tour to Zagora through the Draa Valley, where we will refresh ourselves with a good cup of mint tea. We will arrive at the door of the Sahara “Mhamid”, that is where we will spend the first night in a Hotel-Kasbah. This journey is 450 km (279 miles).
Day 2 • Mhamid – Sacred Oasis – Erg Chigaga Desert
On our second day, we will enjoy breakfast and go out to the desert dunes with dromedaries. After lunch we will take our 4×4 vehicle and head towards the largest dunes in the “Erg Chigaga” region. There we will spend the night in a camp in an authentic Berber tent (jaima) under the starry night sky in the middle of the desert.
Day 3 • Erg Chigaga – Taznakht – Marrakech desert
Before breakfast we will first enjoy a fantastic show of sunrise in the desert dunes of Morocoo. Afterwards we will head towards the Berber village of Taznakht. On our way back to Marrakech we will pass the old Dakar Rally road, and the crossing of Lake Iriqui. We will arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon.
